Solar Savings = NONE
(Tier 2) payback =144+years!
This is not about DECATUR -
it's about the SAN JUAN ISLANDS - ALL OF US!
OPALCO has installed 1 solar microgrid - the cost was $3,158,000 - they claim it will help reduce rates for everyone. IT WON'T. In fact it's a huge EXAGERTION and they want to do it again and again and put solar microgrids on ORCAS, SAN JUAN, LOPEZ, SHAW and BLAKELY (and expand the one on DECATUR) (And asthetically ruin 100's of acres)

For a ~$3.158 million investment (historical grant and project funding levels cited for portions of the microgrid, including battery/storage components), the pure energy savings payback is extremely long—around 144 years ($3.158M ÷ $22k). This doesn't account for loan interest (if any), ongoing maintenance, labor, insurance, battery degradation (batteries typically last 10–15 years), or panel efficiency losses over time. Equipment like batteries won't last anywhere near that long, making this an incredibly poor business decision!
